AEC was retained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to install a new 945 foot, three span, prestressed concrete girder bridge within the Eliot Branch, a tributary to Middle Fork Hood River. The previous Red Hill Drive Bridge was washed away by a large debris torrent in the fall of 2006. After completing surveying and staking activities, AEC installed strict erosion control measures and began access road construction and extensive clearing, grubbing, and obstruction removal. The bridge substructure portion of the work consisted of heavy excavation work and embankment grading, setting bridge footwork through pile driving activities, and forming and pouring foundation concrete. Once the area was prepped and all substructure work was verified as sound, AEC began installation of the bridge deck sections using two large cranes working from each side of the riverbank. Final site work activities included installation of boulder protection for the bridge abutments, restoring all disturbed areas, final grading of base rock for the new roadway surface, road paving and road signage installation activities.
