Tacoma Smelter Plume – Yard Program Vashon-Maury Island

Location: Vashon Island, Washington
Client: Washington State Department of Ecology
Contract Value: $522,678

AEC has been awarded multiple phases of work for the Asarco Smelter Plume Cleanup program in and around Tacoma, WA. This program, led by the Washington State Department of Ecology, is an effort to remediate arsenic and lead impacted soils from residential properties lying in the plume of the Former Asarco Smelter. To date we have been awarded three phases and have remediated and restored 57 individual residential yards in Tacoma and on Vashon-Maury Island.

For the Vashon-Maury Island Property Group project, using AEC-owned and operated equipment, we performed the surgical excavation of six (6) residential properties, removing arsenic and lead contaminated soils. We also implemented temporary construction controls for environmental protections.

The Vashon Project included the creation of temporary access roads to reach some of the properties in order to perform the remediation activities. AEC hauled and disposed of contaminated soils at the nearby LRI Subtitle D landfill. Once the contaminated materials had been removed, our crews used imported clean soil to backfill and grade the yard and restored each property to preconstruction conditions or better with various landscaping, lawn restoration and maintenance activities.
